Public Hearing on WNP-1/4 Site Restoration Plans
Date: October 27, 1999
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 P.M.
Location: Multipurpose Facility, 3000 George Washington Way, Richland, WA
The Washington State Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC or Council) invites you to participate in its consideration of future plans to restore or reuse Energy Northwests (formerly the Washington Public Power Supply Systems) terminated WNP-1/4 Nuclear Plant Sites, located on the Hanford Reservation. EFSEC, the state agency responsible for regulating public health and safety at the 1/4 site, is conducting a public hearing on October 27, 1999, to provide an opportunity for citizens, stakeholders, and interested persons or organizations to comment on future plans for the 1/4 site. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Purpose Facility Glenn C. Walkley Room, 3000 George Washington Way, Richland, Washington.
Energy Northwest has submitted a document entitled "Site Restoration Plan" to EFSEC that sets out a series of options or levels for site restoration at the 1/4 sites. The document presents nine (9) restoration alternatives that range from just securing the site to complete demolition of all buildings and structures. The document addresses the safety and environmental impacts associated with each restoration level and includes cost estimates for completing the work. Energy Northwest has not formally identified a preferred level nor has EFSEC decided on a level of site restoration. At the same time as it is developing restoration options, Energy Northwest is also working with local agencies to examine potential reuse or redevelopment of the 1/4 site and facilities.
This hearing provides an opportunity for EFSEC to hear comments and ideas on the scope and nature of the plan and a process that it should follow when considering the plan. We invite you to attend and participate in the hearing on the 27th. Alternatively, we would welcome any written comments you might care to submit either before or after the hearing. The Council expects to make decisions as to procedural matters at its November 8th meeting.
If you require special assistance, a translator, or auxiliary aids to participate in the meeting, please contact Mike Mills at (360) 956-2151. For TDD, call (360) 956-2218.
